General School Introduction

The East Hills Girls Technology High School is highly regarded in the community attracting enrolments from a wide area of south-western Sydney. The school focuses strongly on students achieving their personal best through excellence in teaching by committed, highly-trained, experienced staff. A comprehensive curriculum is offered to meet student needs. Students develop skills to become effective, life-long learners, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens able to meet the challenges of their futures.

The school is situated on a large site with well-established trees and gardens. Adjacent to the school grounds are sporting ovals and tennis courts.

A wide variety of co-curricular activities is offered including gymnastics, choir, band, debating, public speaking, drama, and dance groups. The school participates in many interschool sporting competitions.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Programs

· Teachers have undertaken specialised training to better meet the needs of ESL students in courses other than English.

· Provision is made for students to

study the ESL course for the HSC.

Languages Taught

· French, German, and Japanese

· The school supports students in studying their home language through the Saturday School of Language program

Special Programs

· East Hills Girls is a technology High School so there is an emphasis on the development of technological skills.

The use of technology is integrated into the study of all courses and students may select to study any of the available information technology courses

· ESL students may receive additional support in Year 11 through undertaking the Fundamentals of English course

· VET courses are offered in information technology, hospitality, retail operations, business services, and entertainment

Student Support Service and Programs

· The school has a very successful student welfare program based around a house system.

· Each student is allocated to a house, which is under the care of a house coordinator.

· The International Student Coordinator meets regularly with every overseas student

Special Facilities

· Eight specialised information technology rooms with computers networked across the school

· Students have access to the Internet

· Comprehensive library

· Specialised rooms include science laboratories, creative and performing arts rooms, gymnasium, and kitchens and textiles rooms

HSC Results and Year 12 UniversitylTAFE Placements

· HSC results have been consistently above average for many years with a maximum UAI frequently being over 99/100.

· Well over 10% of students achieved results in the top 10% of the state.

Of those students who applied for university entrance, over 80% were accepted.

· Over a number of years, approximately 45% of students have proceeded to university, 40% to TAFE, and 15% have gone directly into employment.

Features of Local Area

· Panania is a well-established suburb situated near the Georges River in southern Sydney, and near a national park.

· The area provides high-quality library, medical, and sporting facilities.

· Panania is on a major train line

with direct access to the airport (20 minutes) and Sydney (30 minutes). Road access to Sydney is by a motorway and takes 25 minutes.

The adjacent large suburban centres of Hurstville and Bankstown cater to a diversity of cultural needs and support
